Penn State Football hosted a long list of recruits on campus Saturday for their first practice in full pads this spring.

New York defensive back prospect Tayvon Nelson was one of the lucky prospects who was able to earn a scholarship offer from the staff following the trip and spoke about it with us here at Nittany Nation almost immediately after.

“So I found out about the offer today after the visit,” Nelson told Nittany Nation. “Coach Franklin told me about the offer and I was surprised. He told me to continue to work hard, work on my craft and they’ll be recruiting me very hard throughout."

Nelson went a little more in detail about his trip and the experience of seeing the team practice in full pads.

“The visit was great,” said Nelson. “I loved everything about Penn State, especially the way the coaches interacted with players in meetings and on the field. The thing that stood out the most was the practice intensity. It was the first day in pads and I loved the competition everyone brought out and how involved coach Franklin was with everything.”

The Canarsie High School product was also able to catch up with a familiar face as he is close with one of the school’s alumni and current Nittany Lion defensive lineman Adisa Issac.

“I spoke with Adisa (Issac) today,” said Nelson. “We mostly just caught up with each other, not much about the school. He tells me things about the program all the time though, he loves it there.”

At the moment the 6-foot-2, 187-pound cornerback prospect holds offers from the likes of 15 different schools, but the new offer from Penn State has stuck out a bit to him.

“They are definitely near the top of my list right now,” he said. “I have nothing else planned right now but I’m going to sit down with my coaches that handle my recruiting and talk a bit.”

RIVALS REACTION.....

This visit to campus was Nelson’s second ever trip to check out the Nittany Lions and it could be the one that secured his commitment for the staff. He is very high on the staff and has built some great relationships with the guys, plus add in his close friendship with current Nittany Lion Adisa Issac and this one could be wrapped up sooner rather than later. Going to have to do a little bit more digging over the next few days to make sure he is definitely a take this early, but this is one to keep a close eye on as a futurecast could come sooner rather than later.
