Saquon Barkley is a semifinalist for the 2017 Lombardi Award, which honors college football's best based on performance, leadership, character and resiliency.

It’s been more than two weeks since Saquon Barkley declared for the NFL Draft, bypassing his final season of eligibility, but his college career with Penn State continues to be recognized.

Announced Monday, the Nittany Lion’s 100th All-American is among 21 candidates for the Lombardi Award. Presented by the Lombardi Foundation, which is based out of Houston, the acknowledgment goes to one Division football player of any position who has earned it based on performance, leadership, character and resiliency.

Penn State has had two former student-athletes win the award: Bruce Clark in 1979 and Carl Nassib in 2015.

Barkley will learn if he is to follow in the footsteps of his Nittany Lion predecessors on Jan. 27. The presentation occurs at Lone Star College in Houston and is to be broadcast nationally on ESPN3. Before the event, seven finalists are to be announced Jan. 22.

With or without the honor, Barkley is already one of the most decorated athletes in college football for this past season and one of the most all-time at Penn State. The junior running back was also the most dangerous player in the Big Ten. Named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, Running Back of the Year and Return Specialist of the Year, Barkley earned the Chicago Tribune Silver Football for the second consecutive year as the Big Ten’s top player. In addition, he won the Paul Hornung Award for the most versatile player in the sport.

A native of Coplay, Pa., Barkley finished fourth in the voting for the 2017 Heisman Trophy. He ranked among the top 10 nationally and led the Big Ten in: all-purpose yards (179.15 per game), total touchdowns (23), rushing touchdowns (18), kickoff return touchdowns (2) and scoring per game (10.6 points).

Joining Barkley as a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award includes: QB J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), DE Bradley Chubb, (N.C. State), OT Tyrell Crosby (Oregon), S DeShon Elliott (Texas), S Minkah Fitzpatrick, (Alabama), LB Shaquem Griffin (UCF), QB Lamar Jackson (Louisville), S Derwin James (Florida State), LB/QB Joel Lanning (Iowa State), RB Bryce Love (Stanford), DE Hercules Mata’afa (Washington State), QB Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), OG Quenton Nelson (Notre Dame), DT Ed Oliver (Houston), DT Da’Ron Payne (Alabama), Rashaad Penny (San Diego State), LB Roquan Smith (Georgia), DT Vita Vea (Washington), WR James Washington (Oklahoma State), DT Christian Wilkins (Clemson).
