Chris Godwin is the first off the board for Penn State.
On Friday night, Godwin was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft with the No. 83 pick overall.
An early entry to the draft, Godwin decided to forego his senior season with the Nittany Lions after an outstanding junior campaign. A former four-star recruit from Middletown, Del., Godwin amassed 59 catches for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns, which established a school record for a junior. That followed a sophomore season in which Godwin surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, becoming just the third receiver in school history to accomplish such a feat.
Godwin finished his career ranked fourth on the school career receiving yardage list with 2,404 total and tied for fourth with 18 career receiving TDs. Perhaps his best outings came during post-season play.
Appearing in three bowl games throughout his career, Godwin went for over 100 yards each time. In the Rose Bowl this January he set school bowl records with nine receptions, 187 receiving yards and two TDs. His 187 yards rank fourth in Rose Bowl history.
Just three days after his record-setting performance Godwin announced for the NFL Draft. He then went on to increase his stock with a stellar performance at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. There he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds.
Many predicted that effort along with his consistency in WR drills both at the combine and at his pro day would be enough to make him a day two pick in the draft.
With the Buccaneers selecting Godwin with their third overall pick, he did just that.
According to Godwin's college head coach, the Buccaneers are getting a versatile athlete who can be relied upon for his steadiness both on and off the field.
“Chris has been a leader in our wide receivers’ room and on this team throughout his Penn State career,” James Franklin said via press release after Godwin announced he was entering the draft. “He is one of the top receivers in Penn State history and has made numerous memorable catches throughout his career. We are thankful for all of Chris’ contributions to Penn State Football and look forward to seeing him excel on the next level.”
