Katie Rowland earns Big Ten Gymnast of Week

For the third time this season and the seventh time of her career, Penn State senior Katie Rowland (Georgetown, Ontario) has been tabbed as the Big Ten's Gymnast of the Week. Rowland placed second in the all-around last weekend against third-ranked Nebraska, scoring a 39.625, a mark just .100 shy of her school record.

Rowland placed in the top four in all four events against the Huskers, including a title on the floor with a career-high score of 9.950. She tied her season-high on the balance beam with a 9.900 to finish second and set a new season mark on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.900 to finish fourth.

The Canada native was also honored this season as Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 29 and Feb. 18. She was named the Conference Gymnast of the Year in 2001 and is the defending Big Ten champion in both the all-around and the vault.

Rowland holds the Penn State school record in both the vault (10.000) and the uneven bars (9.950) as well as in the all-around (39.725) and is currently ranked seventh in the nation on the vault and 16th in the country in the all-around by GymInfo.
The 20th-ranked Nittany Lions take to the road to battle the Golden Gophers of Minnesota on Saturday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. CT in Minneapolis. The Gophers, currently ranked 17th in the country, are coming off a second-place finish at the North Carolina Quadrangular last weekend while Penn State dropped its first home meet of the season to third-ranked Nebraska. The Nittany Lions return home for their final meet of the year on Friday, March 14, when they host Florida, Temple and Yale in a quad meet starting at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall.
