A tribute to Paterno:
After the Penn State victory the team carried Paterno from the sidelines to a large platform at midfield, where his family awaited his arrival. A crowd made up of reporters, football players, cheerleaders, and a few fans stood as Paterno greeted his wife and grandchildren with hugs for a ceremony honoring him.
"I can't put into words how I feel about this town, team, and University," Paterno said. "I've had 52 great years here. I can't tell you how proud I am of this football team. They could have packed it in a long time ago."
A video covering highlights of Paterno's career was shown afterward. A packed Beaver Stadium cheered on as the video concluded, and Paterno waved on in appreciation. The players who had gathered for the event were excited.
"This feels great," Sam Crenshaw said. "It feels so great to be a part of this, this is a once in a lifetime event. I am glad to be part of it."
Zack Attacked:
Zack Mills became only the third quarterback in Penn State history to produce over 400 yards of total offense. Mills, who came in on the Lions' second possession completed 17 of 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, breaking his own freshman record. He ran the ball 15 times for 138 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 69-yard romp as he hurdled a tackler, and bounced off another defender on his way to the end zone. The touchdown run was the longest by a Penn State quarterback since 1991.
Deuces are wild:
Ohio State looked as if they would make Paterno wait for his 324th victory when the second half began. In three minutes the Buckeyes scored two touchdowns. The first came as Ohio State's Jonathan Wells took the ball up the middle 65 yards for a touchdown. The second score came as the Buckeye's Derek Ross intercepted a Mills' pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, giving Ohio State a 27-9 lead.
Variety Pack:
Various Penn State players ran the ball for the Lions. Mills finished as the leading rusher with 138 yards. Among the others were: Larry Johnson 14 for 68 yards, and Omar Easy 5 for 26.
On the receiving end:
Mills threw a pair of touchdown passes today. The first was a 26-yard strike to Tony Johnson with 4:40 left to go in the third quarter. The second touchdown was set up with a 31-yard strike to tight end R.J. Luke. Mills then threw his second score of the afternoon, a 14-yard touchdown pass to McCoo with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter. It was the second straight week Mills connected with McCoo in the fourth quarter for the winning score.
Block that kick!
Ohio State showed that it was not out of the game, late in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes managed to drive into Penn State territory, and with 2:55 left attempted a field goal that was blocked by the Lions' Jimmy Kennedy.
Career highs:
Along with Mills, a few other Lions had big days. Punter David Royer had a career long 64-yard punt that pinned Ohio State back at their own 2-yard line with 12:25 left in the fourth quarter. Freshman Robbie Gould kicked a 46-yard field goal twice (once in the first quarter, and another one in the second) for a career high in distance.
A first in the first:
Robbie Gould's 23-yard field goal in the opening quarter of play was the first time the Nittany Lions scored in the first quarter this season.
