Signed: Yetur Matos

WHAT HE DID In helping lead Chancellor to an 8-2 regular season as a senior, Matos finished with 130 tackles, including 21 that went for losses, and 18.5 sacks. His sack total was the highest in school history, and he also holds Chancellor’s record for most sacks in a career.

WHAT HE WON Matos was named co-player of the year and defensive player of the year in his conference. He also earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-State honors from multiple publications. A four-star prospect, Matos is a member of the Rivals250, coming in at No. 128 overall. He’s the nation’s sixth-ranked strongside defensive end and the fourth-ranked player in Virginia.

WHERE HE VISITED Matos checked out nearly a dozen programs during his recruitment, including Charlotte, Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He also earned an offer from Alabama, but in the end, the Tar Heels, Volunteers, Cavaliers and Hokies gave PSU the strongest competition.

QUOTABLE Rob Matos (father): “He’s extremely long and he’s extremely fast. He’s got a really solid football IQ. He studies the game quite a bit. He hasn’t always been that way, but he’s really matured over the last couple of years and really become a student of the game and studied different defenses and how to play different scenarios in different situations, which has really impressed me. He is incredibly coachable. ... He’s a hard-working kid. He’s got a high motor, and the upside is ridiculous.”

PHIL’S TAKE One of the most athletic strongside defensive end prospects in the Class of 2017, Matos is reported to have 4.57-second 40-yard speed, a 30-inch vertical leap and a 4.32 shuttle time. He has the frame to play at 260 or even 270 pounds at the college level. Physically, he reminds me of former Nittany Lion All-American Courtney Brown. Matos uses his hands well to shed blocks and gives 100 percent on every play. He has the potential to be a four-year contributor at Penn State.
