Three Nittany Lions selected in seventh round of NFL Draft

Over the span of three picks during the 7th round of this weekend's NFL Draft, three Nittany Lions learned of their NFL futures.

Shaka Toney was selected 246th overall by the Washington Football Team. Michal Menet came next as the Arizona Cardinals called his name at No. 247. Will Fries followed when the Indianapolis Colts selected him at 258.

The trio joins Micah Parsons, Jayson Oweh, and Pat Freiermuth to make it six Nittany Lions who have heard their name called this weekend.

Toney, who joins fellow Penn Stater Troy Apke on Washington's roster, was an important pass rushing presence for the Nittany Lions throughout his career.

He came away with at least 3.5 sacks in each of his four seasons in a Penn State uniform, including 6.5 sacks in 2019 — his career high. In total, Toney got to the quarterback 20 times as a Nittany Lion. He also contributed 111 total tackles — 28.5 of which came for a loss — and forced four fumbles.

Menet was a reliable offensive lineman for Penn State, making 34 starts at the center position for James Franklin and his staff. He was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2019 and was a third-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2020. He'll join fellow Nittany Lion Shareef Miller in the desert.

Fries, like Menet, was ever-present for Penn State in the trenches. He made 42 starts for the Nittany Lions and showcased important versatility as well, starting games at right tackle, left tackle, right guard and left guard. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 2019 before cracking the second team in 2020. He joins Robert Windsor in Indianapolis.
