According to multiple reports, former Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien is returning to the Big Ten. The 54-year-old O'Brien is set to join Ohio State as the Buckeyes' offensive coordinator.
O'Brien took over the Penn State program in 2012, leading the program to a 15-9 record over two seasons. Following the 2013 season, O'Brien left Penn State to take a head coaching job with the Houston Texans. In seven seasons with the Texans, O'Brien led the franchise to a 52-48 record including a 2-4 record in the playoffs,
After being fired as the Texans head coach and general manager in 2020, O'Brien joined the Alabama Crimson Tide as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach before returning to the NFL this past season to serve as the New England Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
It is expected that O'Brien will be the Buckeyes' playcaller, taking over the duties from head coach Ryan Day. The Massachusetts native will look to improve an Ohio State offense that averaged 30.5 points per game in 2023.
Ohio State and Bill O'Brien will take on Penn State next fall on November 2 at Beaver Stadium.
