He left the game in the third quarter, after his knee twisted awkwardly while covering a punt. He was helped off the field in obvious pain.
Hayes will have surgery within the next two weeks on the knee, and the resulting rehabilitation will take approximately nine months, according to Penn State Director of Athletic Medicine, Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound redshirt sophomore from Bayonne, N.J., recorded 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks from his hybrid position this fall. He played in all seven games this season, recording a career high 6 tackles against Michigan.
It is currently unknown who will replace him on the depth chart.
