Joey Porter Jr earns national honor for week one performance

The weekly accolades for Penn State keep rolling in. After quarterback Sean Clifford was named Big Ten Co-Offensive player of the Week on Monday, the Nittany Lions defense was given some love on a national level.

Redshirt junior cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was named the Bednarik Award National Defensive Player of the Week after leading Penn State in tackles and pass breakups in Thursday’s win over Purdue.

Porter Jr. had eight tackles and six pass breakups on the night, as well as a fumble recovery just before the end of the first half that led to a late touchdown for Penn State to take a 21-10 lead into the half. His six pass breakups in one game is the most in Big Ten history. Purdue’s offense targeted Porter Jr a whopping 17 times in the game.

Last season, Porter Jr. had 51 total tackles and four pass breakups in 13 games played. This is his second weekly honor in a Penn State uniform after receiving Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in December 2020.
