Texas QB interested in PSU offer

Penn State sent out a few scholarship offers in the Class of 2018 this week to quarterbacks outside its normal recruiting footprint.

One of those recipients is Spencer Sanders, a standout for Ryan High in Denton, Texas. Having been in contact with new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, Sanders was made aware of his offer from PSU Tuesday. Sanders has also been in touch with head coach James Franklin after a representative from PSU paid a visit to Ryan recently, asking Sanders' coach for the QB to call.

As a sophomore, Sanders threw for 1,061 yards and an average of 14.3 completions per game.

In light of the conversations he's had with Nittany Lion coaches, he's still learning about the school. From what he knows so far, especially about Moorhead's offensive system that he's implementing, it's an intriguing option.

"There is interest because of the way they play," Sanders said when asked about his thoughts of the out-of-region offer. "It is similar to the offense I grew up (playing) and I feel like I could fit in it very well."

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound signal caller, Sanders currently holds offers from Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, North Carolina, North Texas, Southern Methodist and Texas A&M – in addition to PSU.

Like PSU's, the majority of Sanders' offers have com within the past month or so, and his only visit during that timeframe was to Texas A&M. Therefore, he's still learning about many of his suitors.

While Moorhead and Franklin have made it clear that Sanders is a prospect of high interest, they've also put forth effort in order to show Sanders what the university has to offer through pictures and videos.

That's been helpful, Sanders said, since he wasn't familiar with the school before their talks. "But I'm not worried about how good it looks," he added. "If I can go there and have a field to train on and play I'm cool with it. But it looks like a very nice place."

Sanders doesn't have any immediate visit plans, but PSU's coaches are encouraging him to make the trip.

As a sophomore for Ryan, Sanders threw for 1,061 yards, averaging 14.3 completions per game. He totaled nine touchdowns compared to just one interception.

In addition to Sanders, PSU also offered two other quarterbacks from the southern region – both of which came on Tuesday and were extended by Moorhead himself. The two other QBs are Connor Noland from Greenwood, Ark., and and Casey Thompson of Moore, Okla.
