Penn State head coach James Franklin remarked Monday that the decision to move Anthony Zettel from defensive end to tackle had been met with great skepticism two years ago.
He must not have known what Zettel would have in store for the Nittany Lions Pro Day on Thursday.
Competing in drills alongside his defensive line teammates Austin Johnson, Carl Nassib and Tarow Barney, Zettel's morning performance wasn't his final of the day. Rather, in what would be the final workouts for NFL scouts, Zettel lined up with tight end Kyle Carter and repped through an entire set of blocking drills and pass routes as an H-back.
Saying that versatility is prized in the NFL where all 32 teams are looking for many, many different things and different fits, Zettel said he was happy to oblige.
"They just wanted to see me catch the ball and stuff," said Zettel, noting that he hasn't spoken to specific teams about possible interest in a position change of any sort. "I mean, in the NFL you can play D-line and still play sets of everything. They don’t really have any individual thing where you’re going to be and where you fit best because there’s 32 teams and each team wants different people in different spots.
"I think I bring a little more versatility to the D-line and I feel comfortable playing other positions too."
Weighing in at a healthy 280 pounds Thursday, four fewer pounds than his playing weight during the 2015 season, Zettel said he is comfortable with his body composition but will look to continue gaining muscle mass as the NFL Draft nears at the end of April. Finally feeling back to 100 percent after a season of injury trouble that nagged throughout the season, Zettel said he was happy with his performance Thursday.
"It feels great. I wish I felt like this during the season to be honest with you. It would have been a lot different," said Zettel. "But I feel very comfortable with my body right now and I’m headed in the right direction."
Training in State College until the draft, likely to take meetings with teams for individual workouts in the meantime, Zettel added that there was a definite sense of comfort at being back in Holuba Hall for his Thursday workout as opposed to the pressure of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last month.
And as for his position? Whether he's taking reps at H-back or at any spot on the more familiar defensive line, Zettel is confident in his abilities in a variety of ways.
"I feel comfortable at all spots. I do like three-tech pass rushing against the guards. I think I have a little advantage there," he said. "I also like holding the edge at D-end too, so I don’t care where I play."
